DERBY days are like London buses for Petersfield Town – you wait all season for one to come along and then two arrive in the space of just six days.

The Rams and Godalming Town are finally set to do battle tonight at Love Lane (7.45pm) but amazingly the A3 derby clashes are both coming in the final week and a half of the season.

The previously arranged dates for matches between the two clubs have been postponed due to either the weather or cup competition commitments.

However, there is nothing to stop the two sides meeting now as come what may, they must both play each other twice before the final day of the regular season on April 23.

The only time the sides have met in recent times was in a pre-season friendly at Love Lane in the summer after the Rams won promotion from Wessex Division 1.

Both sets of supporters are now eagerly anticipating the chance to see their sides do battle once again – although derby bragging rights will last less than a week after the Love Lane match up as the two sides meet again next Tuesday night (April 19).

“It does feel very strange to not have played Godalming at all until so late in the season and then we get to play them twice inside a week,” said manager Ian Saunders.

“We have been looking forward to this game for a while and I’m sure both sides will be going out there and giving it their all on the night.

“It will be interesting to see how these games are received by the supporters after the derby games we had against Fleet Town earlier in the season.”

Saunders is looking for a positive reaction from his players after the disappointment of losing to Aylesbury United at the weekend.

However, the Rams will need to beat Godalming twice if they are to realise their target of securing a top half of the table finish in their first season at step four level – currently Godalming sit six points and three places above Petersfield who are in 13th place.

“I think the large number of games we have played recently caught up with us on Saturday if I’m honest,” added Saunders.

“But tonight we get the chance to get that display out of our system and in front of our own fans again. With four games to go we will be giving it our all to try and get as many points as we can from those matches.”
