HINDHEAD Golf Club has held its traditional drive-in for its new captains for 2019.

The outgoing captains putted out on the 18th green, and they were followed by the incoming captains’ driving off from the first tee.

Harvie Harrington becomes club captain for 2019, and Erica Pickard is the ladies’ captain. For the first time in 30 years the junior section will have a young woman as their captain, Liberty Jones.

The drive-in was followed by a busy field of competitors in a shotgun team stableford competition.

Other significant changes at the club’s annual general meeting saw Roger Wise succeeding Ruth Hartley as club president. Ruth was the first woman to hold this office in the club’s history, and in recognition of her long service she was elected an honorary life member. Another first for the club was the election of a woman as club vice-captain, Gerry Marvell.

The outgoing captains, Lorne Magory and Lesley Sullivan, announced that throughout 2018 the activities of club members, together with support from the Farnham Lions, had raised £18,000 for Stepping Stones school in Hindhead.

Stepping Stones provides education for those who cannot manage the hectic pace and environment of mainstream education but would not be suitable for the more generalised special needs provision on offer at specialist schools.

Throughout 2019 the club will be supporting Shooting Star Chase’s Christopher’s Hospice in Guildford.
