PETERSFIELD Town manager Mark Summerhill felt his side’s last match of the season was “a game too far” for his players.
The Rams ended their season with a 3-1 defeat at home to high-flying Romsey Town.
The defeat meant Petersfield finished in 15th place in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League.
Summerhill said: “My lads were out on their feet at the end. It looked like one game too many. It was a typical end-of-season game and it was a game too far.”
Despite the defeat, Summerhill was pleased with how his side competed.
He said: “We had a go and we probably created more chances than Romsey, but they were more clinical.
“We got back in the game at 2-1 but we then gave away a soft goal. Romsey were probably the best footballing side we’ve played this season. They are a well-drilled side. They were a bit stronger than us and were well worth the win, but we could have got a point.”
Key man Matt Rowland was unavailable on Saturday, and Summerhill gave starts to some of the club’s promising young talents.
“We missed Matt,” added Summerhill.
“Young Bailey Newbury made his first start. It was a big ask but he did well and he’s going to be a big talent.
“Young Will Webb also started but he got cramp in his legs and had to come off.
“Marvin Orepo made a real impact off the bench and the three young lads are a real positive.”
