HORNDEAN had a mixed week with a win and a defeat in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

The Deans started their week with a 3-0 defeat at Fareham Town last Tuesday night.

The match was goalless at half time, but goals from Lewis Stockford, Archie Wilcox and Luke Slade gave the home side the three points.

Stockford broke the deadlock when he scored the rebound after his penalty had been saved by Horndean keeper Lloyd Thomas, Wilcox headed in from a corner and Slade scored with a fine strike.

Horndean manager Michael Birmingham said: “I’ve got no complaints that Fareham beat us 3-0. The first goal came from a penalty, which was a stonewall penalty, the second came from a corner when Lloyd misjudged the flight, and the third was a good strike.

“Fareham didn’t ever carve us open though.”

The Deans responded to the Fareham defeat in style with a 1-0 victory at Tadley Calleva on Saturday afternoon.

Bobby Scott scored the only goal of the game with a spectacular strike from long range.

“Bobby is probably the only player on the pitch who could have scored a goal like that,” said Birmingham. “Bobby was 35 to 40 yards out and he hit the ball on the half-volley with his supposed weaker foot, and it went in without bouncing.

“We could have scored more. Bobby missed three one-on-ones I would put my life on him scoring. The clean sheet was pleasing as we haven’t had enough of them, and it was good to grind out a win, but it was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.”

Another positive for the Deans against Tadley was the return of Harry Jackson, who came off the bench. “Harry’s been training for a couple of weeks and it’s good to have him back,” added Birmingham.
