HORNDEAN Hawks’ men’s first team enjoyed a successful season as they won their division in the Portsmouth Saturday League, before beating Widley Wanderers in the final of the Billy Hill Cup.

Horndean secured the league title with a 2-0 victory at home to Wymering, with both goals coming in the last quarter of what had been a very nervy match for the hosts.

Widley Wanderers had been Horndean’s main rivals for the league title so the cup final was expected to be a keenly contested affair. On a cold night under the floodlights at Horndean Football Club’s ground, the game was played at a very high tempo with both teams struggling to get into a settled rhythm.

Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges with neither goalkeeper being called into serious action.

Widley had the chance to open the scoring with a counter attack midway through the first half, but managed to slide their effort wide of the target.

Shortly afterwards Horndean Hawks opened the scoring with a deflected shot, adding a superb second shortly afterwards from the edge of the box to lead 2-0 at the break. A third goal early in the second half wrapped up the scoring.
