HORNDEAN had a mixed week, as they followed up a cup win with a league defeat.

The Deans started their week with a 2-1 win at Bournemouth in the third round of the Sydenhams League Cup last Tuesday night.

Mitch Frost gave the visitors the lead in the 13th minute, although Shiv Roushbaiani equalised for Bournemouth on 19 minutes.

Dan Manuel scored Horndean’s winner in the 75th minute to send the Deans through to the next round.

Horndean then lost 2-1 at home to Portland United in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division on Saturday.

Goals from Darren Watts and Ryan McKechnie gave Portland the three points, with Alfie Lis scoring for the home side.

Horndean manager Michael Birmingham was disappointed with his side’s defeat.

Birmingham said: “To be honest we gifted them (Portland) two goals. Defensively we were all at sea for both the goals.

“We were very sluggish in possession and we lost the game in the first 60 minutes.

“Credit to Portland, they got men behind the ball and defended their lead very well.”
