HORNDEAN have sealed a second-place finish in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division with a game to spare.

The Deans picked up four points out of a possible six in the past week to confirm second place.

The Five Heads Park outfit started their week with a comprehensive 6-1 victory at home to Fareham Town last Tuesday night.

Sean McMonagle gave the Deans the lead in the second minute, and then scored his and Horndean’s second goal on 21 minutes.

Andrea Carrera pulled a goal back for Fareham from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, but Mark Smith made it 3-1 on 35 minutes.

McMonagle completed his hat-trick in the 37th minute to make it 4-1 to the home side, and Harry Jackson scored Horndean’s fifth goal on 40 minutes.

Jackson scored his second in the 68th minute to seal Horndean’s 6-1 win.

The Deans then drew 0-0 away at third-placed Bournemouth on Saturday.

The draw means Horndean are four points clear of Bournemouth with only one match left this season.

Horndean manager Michael Birmingham said: “We were down to the bare bones on Saturday, but the boys were excellent.

“In the first half against Fareham we were ruthless.

“The lads have a good attitude, and although we’ve dropped a few too many silly points we’re very satisfied with a second-place finish.

“We’ve got a young group and we’d like to think we can keep on improving, but we need to keep hold of the players.”
