PETERSFIELD Bookshop partner and famous Portsmouth Football Club fan John Westwood is delighted with the club’s promotion to League One.

He was among fans at Notts County for the victory which sealed promotion.

It was Pompey’s first promotion under fan ownership, which made it extra special.

“It was very emotional if I’m honest,” said Westwood.

“We’ve had success at high levels before but this means more because the club was bought by the fans.

“It’s the resurrection of the club from the brink of extinction and what the fans have done and the way they’ve stood behind the club is just incredible. It’s taken us four years and we’ve stuck two fingers up to a lot of people. You’ll never break our spirit, we’re Portsmouth and we’re on our way back.”

Pompey have been owned by the Pompey Supporters’ Trust (PST) since April 2013.

American billionaire Michael Eisner is keen to buy the club through his Tornante firm, and Westwood believes the current owners have done an excellent job.

“It’s looking like a fairy tale,” said Westwood.

“For the club to have been bought by the trust, to have done all the things they’ve done, paying off the debt, the academy, and now to get promotion, I think it would be a fitting finale to what they’ve done, and they could leave with their heads held high.

“We’ve become a beacon for all that’s good in football.”
