HORNDEAN boss Michael Birmingham feels there is room for improvement after his side beat Melksham Town in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.

There was late drama at Five Heads Park on Saturday, as goals from Connor Duffin and Mark Smith turned the tie on its head and sent the Deans through to the next round.

“To be honest nothing happened for the first 75 minutes,” said Birmingham.

“The performance was dire, and, although we went through, I felt devastated with our performance.

“Melksham were very direct and didn’t play any football, and we got sucked into their habits.

“The FA Cup is all about getting through to the next round though.

“The best thing that happened to us was when we went 1-o down.

“We were then brave and got on the ball and as soon as we scored the equaliser we had all the momentum and there was only going to be one winner.

“There was some good build up for Connor’s equaliser, and for the winner Connor squared the ball to Mark, who slotted home.”

The Deans now face a trip to Binfield in the Preliminary Round on Saturday, August 19. Binfield won 4-3 at home to Chichester City in their Extra Preliminary Round tie.

Birmingham added: “I know Chichester City’s manager quite well and he is keeping me updated about them (Binfield). You have got to do your homework.”
