PETERSFIELD Town exited the FA Vase as they lost 2-1 at home to Roman Glass St George in the second round last Tuesday night.
The Rams were leading 1-0 and were set for a place in the next round, before the visitors scored two goals in the last ten minutes to turn the tie on its head and end Petersfield’s impressive FA Vase run.
The game started off slowly but was brought to life by a bizarre Harry Bedford goal in the 14th minute.
His direct free kick from just past the centre circle was assisted by the wind and swerved towards goal and bounced up and over the goalkeeper for an amazing opener.
As the soggy pitch and mist settled, Will Webb had the chance to double Petersfield’s lead. He had the ball on the left wing and cut inside and unleashed a shot which was heading for the top corner. Visiting keeper Ross Grimshaw stuck out a strong palm to deflect the ball past the post.
From the resulting corner Grimshaw was called into action again. This time he made a dramatic save down low to his right to shut the Rams out again.
Petersfield dominated the opening ten minutes of the second half, and their first big chance of the half fell to Jordan Neal. The big striker received a diagonal ball into the area and his touch set him up, but his effort was well blocked.
Roman Glass St George made life difficult for Petersfield as the second half progressed, with both defences working hard to shut down their opponents.
The hosts won a deep free kick and Bedford again stood over the ball. With shouts to shoot from the fans, he did. His dipping free kick needed saving and was by the diving Grimshaw.
As the match went on, the visitors looked more likely to get back into the game.
With nerves creeping into the Rams, things took a turn for the worse for the home side when Matt Low was sin binned with 14 minutes to play.
Things went from bad to worse for Petersfield in the 80th minute, as Roman Glass St George made the most of their man advantage and got back on level terms.
The goal was well taken by Steve Fitzpatrick, who chested and volleyed past Rams keeper Matt Petts to make it 1-1.
With their tails up, the visitors took the lead just five minutes later.
As the Rams pushed for a winner a long ball undid the home team’s defence and Ryan Radford showed excellent pace and glided past defending players before dispatching a cool finish underneath Petts.
The Rams were unable to find an equaliser as the club’s record-breaking FA Vase run came to an end.
n In another weekend dominated by the weather, Petersfield Town’s youth team played their first game for a month by hiring a pitch at Horndean School for Sunday’s home match against United Services Portsmouth Youth in the Hampshire Youth League Cup.
It wasn’t Petersfield’s day, however, as they bowed out of the competition with a 5-2 defeat. Hew Brown and Bailey Newbury, returning after a long lay-off through injury, scored the Rams’ goals.
