Liss Athletic 0 Hamble Club 2: LISS Athletic suffered cup heartache as they went down 2-0 to Hamble Club in Monday’s League Cup final at Portchester.

It was a tight affair throughout with both sides evenly matched but it came down to which side took their chances and Hamble tucked away two of theirs to take the silverware.

It could have been a much happier ending for Richard Bessey’s side but they spurned several chances to get back into the game, especially during the second half.

The first chance of the game fell to Liss on 13 minutes when Glyn Cooper chased after a through ball and, although he tried to lift the ball over Hamble keeper Rory Anderson, his shot sailed well over the crossbar.

Hamble took the lead on 34 minutes when they won a corner on the right. The ball was curled into the six yard box by Liam Crook and it was missed by everyone before it dropped inside the far corner of the net.

Liss then went so close to equalising after the break. Lenny Burney drove into the centre of the penalty area with the ball and saw two shots blocked by the Hamble defence and the loose ball ran towards Doug Rowe but he skied his free shot over the crossbar.

Hamble made sure they would be taking the silverware home with them with five minutes remaining when Crook fired a free kick from the left across the face of goal and Liss defender Craig Ralph could only help the ball into his own net.
