HORNDEAN manager Michael Birmingham was pleased with his side’s performance after they beat Portland United 3-1 in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division on Saturday afternoon.

The Deans took the lead in the first half through Alfie Lis’ goal, and Bobby Scott doubled the home side’s advantage in the second half.

Bailey Rowe pulled a goal back for Portland from the penalty spot, but Greg Peel sealed the win for the home side when he made it 3-1.

The three points took Horndean up to seventh place in the Premier Division table.

“It was a good team effort and we played very well in the second half,” said Birmingham. “We changed our shape from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2, which was a bit of a gamble, but the boys did very well.”

Elsewhere in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division, league leaders Alresford Town lost 1-0 at home to second-placed AFC Stoneham.

Scott Hills scored the only goal of the game in the second half to give the visitors the three points on Saturday.
