LISS Athletic are through to the final of the Puma Engineering League Cup after beating Baffins Milton Rovers in the semi finals last Wednesday night.

The two teams drew 3-3 after extra time at Locks Heath’s Recreation Ground, with Aaron Fennemore, Bryn McKie and Glyn Cooper scoring the goals for Rich Bessey’s side, and Liss held their nerve to win 7-6 on penalties.

Liss got off to a dream start on the night when they took the lead on 21 minutes, before doubling their advantage in the 41st minute to lead 2-0 at half time.

Baffins responded in the second half and pulled a goal back when Tyler Yates scored on 51 minutes.

Brad Fairweather’s 62nd-minute equaliser brought proceedings level at 2-2, and the tie went into extra time.

Liss regained the lead when they scored in the 96th minute, but Danny Rimmer’s 117th-minute equaliser took the tie to penalties.

Liss won the shoot-out to book their spot in the final against Hamble Club on Monday, May 2.

Manager Bessey was delighted with his side’s display on the night.

“We went with a 4-5-1 formation and we played very well,” said Bessey.

“Bryn McKie and Aaron Fennemore were outstanding and we went 2-0 up.

“Baffins are a physical side and credit to them for coming back to 2-2. We went 3-2 up and Baffins then equalised again, but we took some fantastic penalties.

“Unfortunately their manager, Louis Bell, didn’t shake my hand after the game, but credit to the Baffins players as they did shake my hand.”
