Verwood Town 1 Alresford Town 0: A SINGLE goal from Joe Wood gave Verwood all three points against an Alresford side who just don’t seem to be able to score at the moment.
Wood’s goal, a towering header from a right-wing corner, came on 28 minutes and capped an impressive start from the Potters, who were quicker to the ball and swarmed all over the visitors in the early stages.
After the initial onslaught, Alresford improved. Michael Weatherall, newly signed from Andover Town, looked composed and capable between the posts, while Ben Stanbrook made inroads down the left. The Magpies’ best chance came just before the break, when Simon Everett’s deft pass put Liam Magee through one-on-one with home keeper Chris Lynch, but Lynch spread himself well to save.
The second half was largely uninspiring with neither side really looking like scoring. That wasn’t a problem for the home side, who pulled themselves further away from the bottom of the table by banking the win.
Alresford, meanwhile, can reflect that although the defence looked largely sound, that will count for nothing unless they can start to find the back of the net more often.
