AS FAR as perfect days go, the charity football match held in Petersfield in aid of Marlowe Parker couldn’t have gone much better.
The event at Petersfield Town Football Club’s Love Lane Stadium was greeted with perfect weather on Sunday, plenty of famous faces from Pompey’s past were in action on the pitch and plenty of funds were raised for a very worthy cause.
Organisers are still gathering in some sponsorship money but the event at the weekend raised £2,725 – and they still have to hold an auction which will see VIP tickets for a Portsmouth home game, four signed shirts and four signed pictures sold off to the highest bidders.
Two-year-old Marlowe was born with Down’s Syndrome and a heart defect and has spent much of her life in hospital until she was eventually allowed to return to the family home in Highfield Road in Petersfield recently.
The youngster’s family and friends are looking to raise enough funds to build a new room on the side of their house so it can be fitted with the physiotherapy and sensory equipment which will help Marlowe to continue making progress with her health improvements.
The funds raised on Sunday have taken the Team Marlowe fundraising initiative to over £8,000, which means building work will soon be able to start on the new room.
The action on the pitch saw a side representing Team Marlowe, led by Nic Walters, taking on the Pompey Legends team – a side packed with ex-Portsmouth professionals.
The likes of Patrick Agyemang, Sean Davis, Guy Butters, Andy Awford and Alan Knight turned out for the Pompey side and the game finished in a 3-3 draw.
Team Marlowe took the lead through a Dean Burton goal on 12 minutes and then went 2-0 up on the half hour mark when Ben Thomas put a tidy finish past Knight.
The Pompey side netted just before half time when Agyemang got himself on the scoresheet but early in the second half Team Marlowe went 3-1 up thanks to a great finish from Jye Mould.
Davis scored a free kick around the hour mark to get the Legends back into the game before former Petersfield Town player Danny Thompson beat the keeper at the back post to level the scores late on.
As well as the action on the pitch there was plenty to keep visitors to the match entertained off of it as well.
There were live music performances, both before and after the match, in the clubhouse, where a raffle and face painting also took place.
Outside, in the stadium, there was plenty of fun to be had for youngsters, with a bouncy castle, splat the rat, China smashing, and other activities to keep the youngsters entertained.
A crowd of around 300 people enjoyed the match.
