PETERSFIELD Town will be aiming to create their own FA Cup history when they travel to Wessex Premier Division side Moneyfields on Saturday.

The Rams will be looking to get only their third ever victory in the world’s most famous cup competition to take them through to the first qualifying round – the first time the club have achieved this since they changed their name from United to Town.

Petersfield’s only two other victories in 18 previous cup games came against Hailsham Town in 1986 and Blackfield and Langley in 2013.

Their only previous appearances in the first qualifying round came when they were known as Petersfield United in 1985 and 1986.

However, they face a tough task on Saturday when they head to Dover Road for what has always been a keenly contested derby when the two sides have met previously.

Last season’s encounters in the Wessex Premier Division both ended in draws and another tight contest is expected in the FA Cup.

Petersfield manager Ian Saunders has warned his squad that they face a different kind of pressure in these kind of cup ties now they have stepped up to the Southern League.

The Rams are likely to start as favourites to win their way through to a home tie against Weymouth in the next round but Moneyfields will be desperate to cause an FA Cup upset.

“Moneyfields will be desperate to take our scalp,” said Saunders.

“The game will probably not be the prettiest to watch but it will undoubtedly be very competitive, as matches always are between these two sides when they play.

“The FA?Cup brings a different kind of pressure as we will no doubt start the game as favourites but we will be going there looking to win.”

Confidence in the Rams camp has been boosted by last Saturday’s performance at Leighton Town where Petersfield battled back from being 2-0 down at half time to earn a draw thanks to an injury time equaliser from Jordan Neal.
