THE TWO sides lagging behind everyone else in the Southern League’s Division 1 Central will meet tonight in Buckhamshire.

Petersfield Town and Aylesbury have only completed 25 league games each so far this campaign – at least two matches less than all of the other sides in the division.

Both will be hoping tonight’s game can go ahead at Haywood Way because if they both use the games in hand they have successfully, both clubs could dramatically improve their current positions in the division.

Aylesbury are currently in ninth place in the table but they have four games in hand on most of the sides above them and they lie 11 points behind the play-off positions.

Petersfield have yet to be placed in the top half of the table at any point so far this season. They are currently in 15th place but victory tonight would see them climb two places.

They too have plenty of games in hand on the sides above them and a win over Aylesbury would put them just five points behind their hosts.

“It’s a strange fact that both us and Aylesbury have played the least amount of games going into tonight,” said Rams boss Ian Saunders.

“I’m sure both of us feel we should be in slightly different positions in the division and we probably both would be if we had completed the same amount of games as other teams.

“We had another home game called off on Saturday because of the weather – which was frustrating for all of us at Petersfield.

“We played last Wednesday but that, combined with more rain in the days that followed made our pitch unplayable again – we tried to roll the surface but the ground was too wet for the equipment we have.”

Saunders is hoping his side will build on their impressive display when they beat Potters Bar Town at home last Wednesday night.

His only real injury concern for the trip north is the fitness of defender Lewis Hyde but Saturday’s enforced break may have given him time to recover.

“We played well against Potters Bar,” added Saunders. “Tonight is a long away trip for us but we need to build on the last result and match the way we played to have a chance of getting three points at Aylesbury.”
