Leighton Town 2 Petersfield Town 2: After enduring injury time heart break seven days earlier it was Petersfield Town’s turn to be the heartbreakers when substitute Jordan Neal netted a 93rd minute equaliser at Leighton on Saturday.

A week ago Barton Rovers netted in the 96th minute to snatch victory from Petersfield’s grasp at Love Lane.

Neal’s late goal capped a fine fightback for the Rams, who found themselves 2-0 down at half time for the second Division 1 Central game running.

They were more than worth the draw in this encounter and if their goalscoring touch hadn’t deserted them when they created a hatful of chances in the second half, they would have run out comfortable winners.

The Rams dominated the opening period of the first half, producing arguably their best spell of football of the season so far. Their best early chance came on 13 minutes when Joe Briggs cut in from the left wing and shot from the edge of the penalty area but a defender deflected his effort over the crossbar.

Despite this the home side took the lead three minutes later with their first meaningful attack of the game. For a short period of play Petersfield were unable to clear the ball away from their penalty area and the ball eventually fell to Shayne Almond, who hit his first time shot from 25 yards out across keeper Tom Boyle and into the bottom corner of the net.

The Rams went close to equalising soon afterwards when Jason Silver found some space on the right wing. He pulled the ball back to the edge of the penalty area to Alek Przespolewski who hit a low first time shot just wide of the post.

On 28 minutes Almond had a similar opportunity to the one he scored with but this time from the opposite side of the penalty area. Boyle read where the shot was going and made a comfortable save to keep out Almond’s curling effort.

Almond went closer still two minutes later when he cut inside his marker and curled his shot on to the crossbar. Moments later more good build up play by Leighton saw the ball passed to Keiron Schmidt on the edge of the box but he shot straight at Boyle.

This period of good pressure from the home side resulted in their second goal two minutes before half time. A quick throw in on the left caught the Petersfield defence off guard and Samson Alalade received the ball on the edge of the six yard box and had time to pick his spot and smash the ball into the net.

The Rams dominated the second half and created enough chances to win a number of matches – they did more than enough though with their spirited fightback to earn a well deserved draw.

On 49 minutes a corner from the right was headed on at the near post by Dan Sackman and as Ryan Woodford stretched to turn the ball towards goal he could only send it straight up in the air and over the crossbar.

Three minutes later good play down the left saw the ball played inside to Joe Richardson but his curling effort hit the crossbar. From the next attack Przespolewski picked up a loose back pass and took the ball towards goal but keeper Aaron Bufton managed to smother his effort from six yards out.

The Rams pulled a goal back on 57 minutes when a ball in behind the Leighton defence saw the keeper and his defenders both hesitate which allowed Stuart Green to capitalise. He got on to the loose ball, took it past the keeper and then fired it into the net from five yards out.

The home side had a good chance to restore their two goal advantage on 67 minutes when substitute Craig Maisiri got in front of his marker at a corner but Boyle gathered up his shot at his near post.

Petersfield should have been on level terms two minutes later. Silver was put clear on the right and he pulled the perfect cross back across the six yard box. Przespolewski arrived to roll the ball into the net but just as he shaped to shoot the ball jumped up off of the bobbly pitch, over his foot and it was hacked clear to safety.

Boyle made another comfortable low save, this time from David Brown, after Petersfield gave the ball away in midfield.

With ten minutes to go Green spread the ball out wide to Silver on the right and he delivered another great cross into the path of Przespolewski but this time he put his shot well over the crossbar when well placed to score.

On 83 minutes the ball was played up the left hand side this time and pulled back to Przespolewski on the edge of the penalty area. His shot hit Jake Gale as he fell over and it rolled through into the keeper’s hands.

Yet another cross into the box was then half cleared into the path of Jordan Neal, who managed to head the ball over the keeper and towards goal but it eventually dropped wide of the target.

The equaliser eventually came in the third minute of injury time. A corner was flicked on by Sackman and a first attempt on goal was blocked on the line by Bufton. The ball rolled to Neal inside the six yard box and he smashed his shot into the back of the net.
