PETERSFIELD Town manager Mark Summerhill wants his side to return to winning ways after Storm Dennis struck on the weekend.
The Rams’ trip to Totton and Eling fell victim to the storm, while last Tuesday night’s game at home to Alton was also cancelled. Next up for Summerhill’s side is a trip to New Milton Town in Division One of the Sydenhams Wessex League on Saturday, before a home match against Romsey Town next Tuesday night.
The Rams are looking to complete the double against both sides after winning 2-0 at home to New Milton and 1-0 at Romsey earlier in the season in the reverse fixtures.
And Summerhill is targeting six points from the two games.
“New Milton is one of those games we need to go and win,” said the Petersfield manager.
“We’ll be going there looking to win the game.
“Romsey will be a tough game as they’re a good side.
“They’re a typical, dogged Wessex Division One side, but we’ll be looking to win at home. If we can win on Saturday and Tuesday our season will be back on track.”
Postponements are hitting Petersfield particularly hard, as the Rams already have games in hand on most teams in the league after their cup exploits earlier in the season.
And Summerhill says the fixture backlog will be a big test for his side.
“We’ve got a tough run of games coming up with matches nearly every Tuesday and Saturday,” he said.
“We’ve still got a lot of games left to play. This season is becoming very bitty with gaps between games. It’s going to be a big test of our squad and our character. Everyone is behind on games, but we’re doubly behind. We’re still sitting in tenth, though, and are only a few points off the top. There is a lot to play for.”
Another worry for Summerhill is that his players might lose their sharpness if more games are postponed, although the boss plans to tailor his training accordingly.
“Our sessions are short, sharp and intense,” he said. “If Saturday is postponed we’ll get the players in for training and we’ll play an in-house game.”
One positive for Summerhill is he now almost has a fully-fit squad to choose from.
“We’re just missing Jake Bourton,” said the Rams boss.
Horndean were also frustrated by Storm Dennis, as they were unable to travel to Hamworthy United on Saturday because of the weather and the match was cancelled.
Deans boss Michael Birmingham said he had no choice, with people’s safety having to come first.
“We were driving down the A3(M) and we got blown across both lanes,” said Birmingham.
“The signs above the motorway said do not travel.
“It’s one-and-a-half hours to Hamworthy and we had committee members heading over there. It’s not worth the risk.”
Next up for the Deans is a trip to United Services Portsmouth in the Portsmouth Senior Cup tonight (Wednesday). Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
“We’ll be making some changes to give some players minutes,” said Birmingham.
“United Services are having an outstanding season and are a very good side.”
Horndean return to league action on Saturday, when they will host Amesbury Town at Five Heads Park (3pm). The Deans won 5-1 at lowly Amesbury earlier in the season.
Birmingham added: “Amesbury will want to fight for everything, and they’re closing in on Cowes. It will be a tough game.”
The matches involving Liphook United, Liss Athletic and Clanfield on Saturday were all postponed.
