PETERSFIELD Town chairman Graeme Moir reflected on the shock midweek victory in the Portsmouth Senior Cup and declared “that win was for everyone involved in the club.”

The Rams pulled off a big cup upset by beating Wessex Premier Division leaders Moneyfields 4-1 at Love Lane on Tuesday night.

After booking their place in the Fratton Park final against Havant and Waterlooville, Moir was keen to praise not just the players and football management but everyone at the club.

“I don’t think anyone saw that result coming,” said Moir. “Most people thought we would take a bit of a pasting off Moneyfields but we could easily have scored six or seven on the night.

“The players were excellent and they really rallied after half time. The finishing in front of goal was deadly and that was what made all the difference for us on the night.

“We don’t deserve a Fratton final just because we have had a bad season but that result is one I would dedicate to everyone at the club.

“The players and John Robson and Matt Collins who have stuck at it despite a dismal run of results since the new year, our volunteers and committee who keep doing their jobs whatever happens at the club and our supporters – who have kept coming to matches even when there hasn’t been much to cheer all season.

“The night out at Fratton Park will be one for everyone connected to Petersfield to savour and it is a fitting reward for the hard work everyone has put in this campaign – I am so chuffed for everyone.”

Petersfield return to league action tomorrow knowing they can’t do anything to avoid the relegation places on the pitch any more.

They travel to third place Barton Rovers, who are chasing a play-off position so the chances of returning south with any form of result will be tough.

But getting as many points on the board as possible could yet prove vital for the Rams if the Football Association look to hand a reprieve to any of the relegated clubs at step four level.

Moir added: “A reprieve from relegation is unlikely but the FA may look more favourably on our situation if we can accumulate a decent return of points from our final seven matches.

“After Tuesday night’s result I hope that will give everyone the boost they need to transform our cup form into the league games we have left.”
