PETERSFIELD Town chairman Graeme Moir believes that small margins are the difference between the club’s current dismal campaign and having a fighting chance of beating the drop.

He surveyed the Southern League Division 1 Central table ahead of the club’s trip to Kempston Rovers tomorrow and believes the statistics that the Rams have compared to other sides towards the bottom of the table highlight where their problems are.

However, he also believes those same stats show that they haven’t been far off being able to pull away from the relegation places in the division.

“Those who have followed the club all season have cursed our luck and stated how we have been in most of the games we have played,” said Moir.

“There have only been three or four matches where we would say we were soundly beaten during the current campaign.

“In some ways that makes where we are that much more frustrating – you could probably accept relegation, if that comes, more easily if we were being thrashed every week.

“It’s a credit to those who have stuck by us that they have kept themselves going in games and tried to battle and scrap their way to getting more points on the board.

“But when you sit back and look at the stats you realise if one or two results had come at the right time we might just have pushed on and things would look a lot different now.”

The Rams have conceded 90 goals in their 32 league games so far but the sides above them have only conceded 20 to 25 goals less over the season to date.

At the other end Petersfield have only scored 28 league goals so far and most have those have been scored by two strikers – Dan Simmonds and Billy Connor.

Defeats wise, the Rams have only had five or six more than the two sides immediately above them but Histon and Aylesbury have both been able to chalk up more victories by around the same numbers.

Petersfield have no new injury or suspension worries going into the Kempston trip following their 4-2 defeat at home to Kidlington last weekend.

The squad is also set to be boosted with a couple of new signings expected to be added to the travelling party.
