Aylesbury 1 Petersfield Town 2: IT FEELS like one in a million – that’s how rarely Petersfield Town have won on their travels since their step up into the Southern League.
This victory on Saturday was in fact one in 25 million – that’s the number of seconds which have passed since their victory at Royston Town in the league on January 23 – or 16 league matches have passed on the road without a win.
The three points picked up at Aylesbury is only the fifth time the Rams have managed to do this in their Southern League history – other successes on the road came at Aylesbury United, North Greenford United and Uxbridge.
The home side dominated the play in the opening period of the match and they had their first chance on goal after six minutes.
The ball was worked up the right hand side by Andre Olukamni who then passed the ball inside to Keiron Turner who ran on into the penalty area before trying to lift his shot over keeper George Hill, who blocked his effort with his body.
Three minutes later Turner tested Hill again, this time hitting a low shot after more good play on the right and the Rams keeper had to dive at full stretch to push his shot around the post.
However, Aylesbury eventually took the lead on 20 minutes after Petersfield lost the ball in midfield. Again the ball was worked to the right where Olukamni got clear of the visiting defence and he sent his shot across Hill and into the far corner of the net.
After this setback the Rams edged their way into the game as they improved going forwards and they went close to equalising three minutes later when a cross was curled towards goal and both Matt Andrews and Preston Tee just missed getting a touch to the ball.
The home side nearly doubled their lead when Jon Montgomery hit a shot from the edge of the box which Hill initially spilled but he regathered it at the feet of Adam Dickens as he looked to prod home the rebound.
Petersfield got their equaliser on 36 minutes when Andrews got clear on the left and his cross took a deflection which saw the ball loop up high into the air. As it dropped at the far post Alfy Whittingham made sure he was under the ball to bundle it over the line from close range.
Hill had to be alert to an Aylesbury attack two minutes before half time when Turner picked up a loose ball in midfield and after driving forward with it he hit a shot which moved wickedly in flight and the Rams keeper had to beat the ball away.
The rain continued to fall during the second half and it was Petersfield who played the conditions better – constantly looking a threat when they got the ball in behind the home defence, whereas Aylesbury’s attacks broke down when through balls skidded away on the damp surface.
The Rams got what proved to be the winning goal on 65 minutes when Andrews was sent sprawling in the penalty area as he tried to break into space to shoot and a penalty was awarded. Whittingham made no mistake with his spot kick, sending keeper Ashley Jenkins the wrong way.
After this the home side were unable to fashion any real chances on goal as the Rams blocked, tackled and ensured they won everything in the closing stages to keep Aylesbury out.
The home side’s best chance came on 78 minutes when Turner beat his man and tried to shoot from 25 yards out but he put his effort well wide of the target.
