Cowes Sports 0 Petersfield Town 1: ANOTHER solid display from Petersfield for the second week running earned them all three points on a stormy day of weather on the Isle of Wight.
Storm Brian wasn’t the only storm in town which didn’t quite live up to its billing – while the Rams had two people ‘dismissed’ during this game it was difficult to see what all of the fuss the match officials made was about during what was a game with little incident to speak of.
However, their actions couldn’t take the gloss off of Petersfield’s second league win of the season – a well deserved three points against a home side who huffed and puffed a lot but lacked the cutting edge in the final third of the pitch to really trouble the Rams.
Petersfield secured all three points with their first chance of the game on five minutes. A long clearance by Jordan Geddes landed in the path of Luke Walker, who took the ball into the penalty area before striking his shot past keeper Sam Sanders and into the far corner of the net.
Two minutes later the visitors had another opportunity to score but Josh Wycherley couldn’t get any power behind his shot from the edge of the box and it rolled through to Sanders.
The home side had their first sniff of a chance on the half hour mark when John McKie picked up the ball 30 yards out and drove into the penalty area but there was no one there to tap home his low cross across the face of goal.
Cowes were most threatening in the ten minutes after half time. On 47 minutes McKie unleashed a shot from the left hand edge of the penalty area which bounced off the top of the crossbar.
Two minutes later Conor White found space inside the box and hooked his shot past keeper Luke Eaton. The ball looked to be heading into the net until a combination of Ed Plackett and a strong gust of wind stopped the ball in its tracks and Eaton gathered it up.
Substitute Callum Chase put his free header over the top following a cross from the left and a cross to the far post was then headed back across goal by Connor Furmidge and with a home player waiting to nod the ball into the empty net Harry Tremlett outjumped him to head the ball away from danger.
Coach Mark Summerhill was then sent to the dressing room for something he appeared to say to a linesman and the same official led to the sending off of Geddes in the last 20 minutes for supposedly kicking an opponent in the head as both players fell to the ground following a challenge.
There didn’t seem to be anything in the incident, which appeared to just be the two players falling into each other as they landed on the ground. Even home officials believed after the match that it wasn’t a red card offence.
Cowes’ best chance late on to equalise came with five minutes remaining when substitute Darren Williams latched on to a long through ball inside the penalty area but with only Eaton to beat the ball bounced off of him and ran through to the keeper.
In the fourth minute of injury time Walker almost snatched his second goal of the afternoon when he latched on to a long clearance on the left before cutting inside a defender and sending a shot towards goal which substitute keeper Ed Hatt had to tip over the crossbar.
Petersfield: Eaton, Gilbert, Geddes, Tremlett, Plackett, Evans, Keogh, Wycherley, Walker, Powell, W Essai (Boxall). Subs not used: Thomas, Small, Summerhill.
