PETERSFIELD Town go into their Russell Cotes Cup clash with Hamble Club tonight (Tuesday) boosted by their win in the league on Saturday.
Confidence in the Rams camp is on a high following their 2-1 win at Aylesbury thanks to Alfy Whittingham’s double.
That result lifted Petersfield back off the bottom of the Division 1 Central table and set them up for what is likely to be a tough test of their Southern League status at Love Lane.
Hamble Club are currently in second place in the Wessex League Division 1 table and they have already netted 71 goals from their first 16 league matches.
Petersfield know the visitors will have a big cup upset in their sights and Hamble could give them a very difficult evening.
“Hamble are absolutely flying in their division and I am sure they will come to us thinking a victory is more than possible,” said Petersfield Town chairman Graeme Moir.
“They have players in their side who have experience at higher levels than Wessex Division 1 and I am sure they will be in the shake up for promotion to the Premier Division at the end of this season.
“In some respects this is the last kind of cup game we want at the moment but we go into it off of the back of beating Aylesbury and Portsmouth Water Company.
“Winning back to back matches has given everyone at the club a lift so we will go into this game with renewed confidence.
“We are also starting to play better football and getting closer to being in a position to pick up more regular results so we will go into tonight’s game looking to pick up another win.”
Despite Petersfield’s poor season so far victory in this game would put them through to their second quarter final in a cup competition this season.
They have already booked their place in the last eight of the Portsmouth Senior Cup and a win over Hamble Club would put them through to the same stage of the Russell Cotes Cup.
Moir added: “The league remains our priority for this season and making sure we don’t get relegated but it would be a nice reward to have a cup final to look forward to at the end of the campaign if we could get to that stage in either of the cup contests we are still in.”
