Petersfield Town 0 Chalfont St Peter 2: PETERSFIELD were left disappointed again on home turf as two goals in three first half minutes brought them a defeat against Chalfont St Peter on Saturday.
This display proved to be reminiscent of previous defeats at Love Lane this season where the Rams struggled to get a foot hold in the game and goals conceded in quick succession killed off any chance of a comeback.
It could have been a very different outcome had Harry Wedlake tucked away his chance to open the scoring in the third minute of the game.
However, he contrived to hit the post from close range after getting on the end of a corner.
There were some early warning signs this wasn’t going to be Petersfield’s day when on ten minutes, some quick play through midfield put Craige Tomkins in behind the home defence but he fired his shot high and wide of the target.
On 24 minutes, a mix up in the Rams’ defence allowed Tomkins to send Alan Hedley racing clear but his rising shot cleared the crossbar.
The first goal came nine minutes later when Kofi Lockhart-Adams jumped for a corner with keeper George Hill, who parried the ball up into the air and when it dropped back down Jack Mullan was on hand to head the ball home.
Quick play in midfield undid the Petersfield defence again three minutes later when Tomkins got clear of his markers before firing off a 25 yard effort which flew past Hill’s dive and into the bottom corner of the net.
Things didn’t improve much for the home side in the second half. After losing keeper Hill to injury, substitute keeper Jamie Bray was called into action when he had to block Lockhart-Adams’ shot with his body.
Bray’s miss-kick in the next attack then fell straight at the feet of Tomkins, who took the time to steady himself before trying to lift the ball into the back of the net but his effort went over the top.
Petersfield had two decent chances to score right at the end of the match. With two minutes remaining Alfy Whittingham seized on a loose ball 30 yards out and when he saw keeper Gary Malone racing off his line, he lifted his shot past him and watched in agony as the ball bounced wide of the far post.
Two minutes later the ball was played into the box from the right and it fell at the feet of Adam Cripps but he blazed his effort just over the crossbar.
Petersfield: Hill (Bray), Searle, Medway, Green, Benjamin, Geddes, Whittingham, Cripps, Andrews, Wedlake (Awford), Kendall (Giles). Sub not used: Buckland.
