Petersfield Town 2 Uxbridge 1: Petersfield Town finally picked up their first Southern League win of the season with this Bank Holiday Monday success over Uxbridge.
The Rams had to dig deep into their energy reserves towards the end of the game - playing with only ten men in their FA Cup game for 70 minutes just two days earlier caught up with some of the players towards the end of this game.
The game got off to a frantic start with both sides scoring within a minute of each other in the opening exchanges.
Uxbridge took the lead after six minutes when a ball from the left was played inside to Matt Woods who turned the ball towards goal with his thigh and it went in off the underside of the crossbar.
However, the Rams drew level from the next attack when Jason Silver burst through on the right and sent in a low cross which evaded everybody apart from Alek Przespolewski, who turned the ball towards goal and it rolled into the far corner of the net.
After that both sides had chances although the visitors probably felt they should have been two or three goals clear of Petersfield by half time.
Good play through the midfield put Joe Briggs clear on the left hand side of the penalty area for Petersfield. He cut inside and unleashed a shot which keeper Paul McCarthy had to beat away.
At the other end, Woods had a free header from a corner but his effort dropped on to the roof of the net, while more good work down the right by Silver set Michael Dixon up but his first time shot went straight into the hands of McCarthy.
Woods then played Wayne Carter in but he scooped his shot over the crossbar from in front of goal. The Rams tried to take a quick goal kick which Woods blocked but he lost his footing with only keeper Anthony Ender to beat.
The Petersfield defence struggled to win the ball back for a period of the game, which allowed Zak Joseph to shoot wide and he then set Woods up with a good chance but he fired over.
The second half was a more even affair with both sides trying to play football from their midfields but neither goalkeeper had a lot to do.
The two best chances in the second period fell to Petersfield.
On 56 minutes substitute Mike McEnery picked the ball up on the right hand edge of the penalty area and drove forward. He passed the ball to Joe Richardson who then fed it to Dixon, who turned his marker and fired a low shot narrowly wide of the goal.
The Rams got their winner with ten minutes remaining. After soaking up some Uxbridge pressure they broke out of defence and a pass sent McEnery bounding forward on the left wing. He got to the byline and pulled his cross back into the path of Jordan Neal, who turned his low shot past McCarthy and inside the near post.
Petersfield: Ender, Hyde, Wain, Woodford, Sackman, Ford, Richardson, Przespolewski (O Searle), Dixon (Neal), Briggs, Silver (McEnery). Subs not used: Gale, Walker.
