PETERSFIELD Town manager Mark Summerhill is hoping a bumper crowd will turn up at Love Lane on Saturday for his side’s FA Vase match.

The Rams will host Western League Premier Division outfit Roman Glass St George in the Second Round of the FA Vase (kick-off 3pm).

It is the first time Petersfield have got this far in the competition, and Summerhill is hoping a big crowd will witness what promises to be an historic game for the Rams.

“It’s a big day for the club,” said Summerhill. “We’ve got mascots lined up from the under-13s.

“We’ve regularly been getting crowds in the 90s, and hopefully we’ll get a few more.”

The Rams have already beaten AFC Stoneham, Sherborne Town and Bournemouth in their Vase run, and Summerhill is hoping his side can claim another scalp.

“We’ll never go into an FA Vase game with such confidence,” he said.

“There is a place in the Third Round at stake, and while we’re still in it you just don’t know how far we’ll go.

“We’ve already beaten a couple of teams in the league above us, so we haven’t had the easiest run to get this far. We love the underdogs tag.

“Roman Glass St George’s results have picked up, and it will be really tough for us.

“They are a tremendously physical side, but we won’t be bullied. Cam Smith and Harry Bedford have been phenomenal for us. They’ve given us a physical edge, but they also have the quality to play.

“We’ve got Matt Low’s finishing and Marvin Orepo’s goals, and pace out wide. We’re also hoping Harry Tremlett will be available, so we should almost be at full strength.

“We just need to worry about our own game and get our game right. We don’t overcomplicate things and we try to do the basics really well.

“We’ve got the second best goals conceded record in our league, and we’re defending as a team really well. We’re not leaking goals and Matt Petts has been phenomenal in goal.

“We’ve got tremendous spirit and character. The players will know what to do.”

Petersfield have strengthened their squad, with left-back Charlie Merritt joining the club from Midhurst. He is unavailable for Saturday’s game, but he should be in contention for the trip to Cowes Sports in the Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

“Charlie is a brilliant full-back and I’m really pleased to get him,” said Summerhill.
