PETERSFIELD Town will be looking to play the role of promotion party-poopers again tomorrow when Aylesbury visit Love Lane (kick-off 3pm).
Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory over Northwood put a severe dent in the visitor’s chances of reaching the Division 1 Central play-offs.
Oliver Bailey’s header on 56 minutes was enough to earn the Rams victory and the three points made it mathematically certain that Petersfield can no longer be caught by any of the sides in the relegation places.
With their step four status now assured, the Rams are targeting another home win against Aylesbury, who are in sixth place and four points outside the play-offs.
“Wednesday night was a very satisfying victory for us,” said Rams boss Ian Saunders. “It put us completely mathematically safe with nine games still to play.
“Northwood were a strong side and did everything they could to try and beat us but we stood up strong to everything they threw at us.
“It was even more satisfying to beat them after their constant moaning and complaining to the match officials throughout the game, complaining about almost every decision during the match.
“My lads deserve credit for sticking to their task with all of this going on and going about their business in the correct manner to ensure we won the game.”
Petersfield were beaten 4-0 at Aylesbury when the sides last met a month ago and the Rams will be keen to ensure they avenge that defeat tomorrow.
Saunders added: “We were beaten fair and square at their place and we just didn’t perform well on the night.
“There were a few things that happened during the game that we were not happy about but this return fixture at Love Lane gives us the opportunity to make up for all of that.
“I’m sure Aylesbury will come to our place and do everything they can to get what could be a crucial three points for them – it is up to my players to raise their game and make sure we compete well enough to earn the three points ourselves.”
