PETERSFIELD Town head to high-flying Farnborough tonight (Tuesday) looking to complete an improbable double over their north Hampshire neighbours.

The Rams’ only home win in nine league games so far at Love Lane – and one of only two wins in the whole of the league campaign to date - came against Farnborough in the opening week of the season.

Dan Simmonds’ hat-trick upstaged Jamie Cureton’s double as the Rams completed a shock 3-2 win in the local derby back in August.

The two sides meet again tonight and their fortunes couldn’t be much further apart. Farnborough are second in the table, just four points behind leaders Royston Town. The Rams on the other hand are second from bottom in Division 1 Central and now eight points behind the next side above them – Beaconsfield SYCOB.

“Tonight’s game has the feel of an FA Cup match for us in some respects,” said Petersfield chairman Graeme Moir.

“It’s a team doing well against a side struggling at the wrong end of the table – all logic says Farnborough will win this game comfortably but in football you never know what can happen.

“We go there with no pressure on us as it is not a game we are expected to pick up any points from. We need to go there and work hard, especially when we don’t have the ball.

“We need to battle and chase for everything – not let them have the chance to settle into their regular game. In all matches you will always get at least one chance to score – if we take that chance when it comes along and do all the other things in our game right, then who knows what will be possible on the night.”

Petersfield had another setback at the weekend when they lost 2-0 at home to Chalfont St Peter.

Moir felt the performance last Saturday ended a run of form which had seen the Rams take some giant steps forward in terms of progressing towards being a side who would be able to put regular point scoring results together.

He added: “We got the four points from our last two away games at Aylesbury and Aylesbury United and although we lost at home to Uxbridge last week, I felt we were unlucky and was looking to the Chalfont game to get another win on the board.

“However, our performance on Saturday probably highlighted where our shortcomings still are. In certain areas we are lacking a player or two and that was exposed a little bit in the Chalfont game.

“Our manager John Robson is working hard to turn the situation around and we all remain positive at the club that he will make the changes and tweaks needed to get the points rattling up on the board soon for us.

“It has been a tough campaign for us so far and we just need to keep working hard and plugging away. The Uxbridge and Aylesbury matches showed that we are capable of putting good form together now – we just need to put everything together out on the pitch with a greater level of consistency now.”
