PETERSFIELD Town must pick themselves up from their midweek defeat against Histon to try and get their season back on track.

There has been plenty of soul searching at Love Lane after Tuesday night’s 4-3 setback – a result which sent the Rams to the bottom of the table.

In many respects it was a disastrous game for Petersfield as they found themselves 3-0 down and down to ten men inside the first 20 minutes of the game.

They did manage to battle back to 3-3 with an equalising goal coming on 84 minutes but just a minute later they allowed the visitors to score again and leave with all three points.

But looking to the few plus points to come from the game, the Rams did possess an attacking threat for a change and they showed plenty of battle and spirit to come back from 3-0 down.

“There were a lot of mixed emotions on Tuesday night around the place,” said Petersfield chairman Graeme Moir.

“I was not too down afterwards because inside I didn’t feel we would win this game. I didn’t think we had got ourselves in the position yet where we could be a team to pick up regular victories – we are close to doing that but we still need some tweaking in the squad and in the way we play.

“I didn’t build this game up into a ‘win at all costs’ scenario so my disappointment at losing was tempered a little perhaps compared to what others in the club and some of our supporters felt.

“For me it’s what we do over the next 19 games overall that counts – our form over that period of matches will determine our fate not a one off 90 minutes.

“Tuesday night reminded me of Pompey’s great escape season in the Premier League after they got beat 5-0 at Birmingham City.

“Everyone at the time thought that was it for Portsmouth but in the end it was Birmingham who went down. Their gloating after that game came back to haunt them.

“On Tuesday night, Histon had obviously put so much into this game – they were even spraying Prosecco around the away dressing room to celebrate their win.

“It’s down to us now to use that as inspiration for the rest of the season and make sure those over celebrations come back to haunt them.”

Beaconsfield SYCOB are the visitors to Love Lane tomorrow – they are only five places above the Rams in the Division 1 Central table but 17 points clear of them.
