Petersfield Town 1 Beaconsfield SYCOB 2: BEACONSFIELD became only the second team this season to do the double over Petersfield Town as they came from behind to win on Tuesday night.
This victory at Love Lane followed up their 5-0 triumph over the Rams earlier in the campaign, joining Ware as the only teams to enjoy two league victories over Petersfield so far this season.
Petersfield had the better of the game in the first half, which was played in atrocious conditions on what became an increasingly heavier pitch throughout the match, but they were left to rue a hatful of missed chances.
The visitors adapted better to the deteriorating conditions during the second period to battle back from a goal down to win the match.
Petersfield were in front after 17 minutes when Stuart Green’s through ball found Oliver Bailey bursting clear of the visiting defence and he had the time to role his shot under keeper Samuel Bunting and into the net.
Bailey had a similar chance to make it 2-0 seven minutes later but just as he fired his shot off on goal Sonnig Low managed to deflect his effort into the side netting.
Two minutes later Beaconsfield had their first chance of the night when Aaron Berry took advantage of a slip in the Petersfield defence to burst clear. He took the ball inside the penalty area before unleashing a shot which Rams keeper Anthony Ender managed to get his hand to and he clawed the ball wide for a corner.
Three minutes before half time Jordan Neal should have scored after Joe Briggs played the ball up to Bailey and a defender’s blocking tackle saw the ball roll into his path but he blazed his shot over the crossbar.
Petersfield had another chance to extend their lead in the opening exchanges of the second half from a free kick on the edge of the box. David Jerrard curled his shot past the defensive wall but hit the post and Joe Richardson tried to force home the rebound but he hit the ball straight into the grateful hands of Bunting, who was still on the ground from his earlier attempt to keep the free kick out of the net.
The visitors drew level on 62 minutes shortly after Aaron Minhas had tried his luck with a shot from 25 yards out, forcing Ender to make a full length save to his left to keep the ball out.
The ball was eventually worked back to a similar position to where the first shot had been taken from but this time Berry bent his shot around the outstretched arms of Ender and into the far corner of the net.
The winning goal came on 71 minutes from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area for Beaconsfield. Tristan Campbell curled his shot over the Petersfield wall and on to the post but the rebound hit Ender on the back and the ball rolled into the net.
With nine minutes remaining Ender did well to tip a shot from Minhas which was moving around in the air over the crossbar.
On 84 minutes Petersfield won a free kick 20 yards out. Briggs’ curling free kick was well saved by Bunting and the rebound rolled into the path of Richardson but again the midfielder failed to find the target when well placed in front of goal to score.
