PETERSFIELD Town manager Ian Saunders is hoping that some home comforts will help his side find their shooting boots once again.
The Rams boss is concerned that the goals have dried up for his side during two lengthy away trips.
His players drew a blank in the trips to Aylesbury and St Ives Town last week and he is at a loss to explain why the goals have suddenly dried up.
However, he is hoping the return to familiar surroundings – starting with tonight’s game at Love Lane against Chalfont St Peter (kick-off 7.45pm) – will spark a revival in the Rams’ goalscoring fortunes.
“I really can’t explain why we are not scoring any goals at the moment,” said Saunders. “There is no stand out reason for this being the case.
“The worrying factor in the last two away games is that we didn’t look like scoring at times – you just couldn’t see where a goal was coming from.
“It wasn’t as though we were missing many players – only Andy Todd has been out of the side in recent weeks due to his Navy football commitments.
“The chances we had in the two games didn’t really trouble the opposition goalkeeper and we could argue that we didn’t get the refereeing decisions we should have done – Oliver Bailey should have been given two penalties against St Ives for example.
“We have a run of home games coming up now and hopefully the familiar surroundings of Love Lane, where we have performed well in the last few games we have played here, will spark something in the players to get them scoring again.”
The visit of Chalfont St Peter is the first of three home matches in six days for Petersfield – they also host Bedford Town on Saturday and Beaconsfield SYCOB next Tuesday night.
March is set to be a busy month for the Rams at Love Lane as they now have eight home league games during that period.
Chalfont were the surprise leaders of Division 1 Central at one stage this season but their promotion challenge has fallen away and they now find themselves two places and five points outside of the play-off places.
They beat the Rams 2-1 when the two sides met at Chalfont back in early September.
