PETERSFIELD Town paid tribute to a man who has played a key role in the development of football in Petersfield before the start of their game against Cirencester Town on Saturday.

A minute’s applause was held in memory of John Wood, who was well known to the whole of the footballing community in Petersfield.

In 1975 he helped to form Petersfield Town Juniors, along with another parent David Martin. From those humble beginnings 40 years ago the Town Juniors have continued to grow and they now boast over 30 teams and a summer six-a-side tournament which is one of the biggest events of its kind in the south.

John did not retire from the club until 2004 and he sadly passed away on September 17.

Petersfield Town Juniors’ under-eights Hurricanes were mascots for Saturday’s FA Cup game, walking out with the players before the game and taking part in a half time penalty competition.
