Aylesbury United 1 Petersfield Town 1: PETERSFIELD Town picked up their fourth league point from two consecutive Saturday away days thanks to a draw at Aylesbury United.
It was an entertaining, open match, which both sides could have won such was their attacking approach to this encounter.
Petersfield well and truly put the troubles of a tumultuous week, where manager John Robson had been removed from his job but swiftly reappointed just three days later, behind them and they looked far from being a team struggling at the wrong end of the table.
And few would have begrudged them their dramatic late victory had Alfy Whittingham tucked away a golden chance to net the winner in the third minute of injury time.
The two sides exchanged half chances early on, with Rams keeper George Hill gathering an early shot easily and the home attack fluffing their lines when the ball fell to them in a good position inside the box. At the other end home keeper Zaki Oualah easily saved a flicked header.
United took the lead on 24 minutes when they broke quickly down the left and a cross in between the goal and the defence was pounced on by Bruno Brito, who guided the ball home into the roof of the net.
However, Petersfield drew level with the next chance of the game seven minutes later. A corner from the left was met with the perfect header into the net – the only thing not perfect about the finish was that it was by home defender Ryan Kinnane.
The home side almost took their lead back straight away when Josh Baines got clear at the other end but he pulled his shot wide. Brito’s dipping shot just went over the crossbar after that.
Harry Wedlake almost fired Petersfield into the lead three minutes before half time when he surged forward with the ball from midfield before unleashing a shot from 25 yards out which crashed against the crossbar.
The game could have gone either way in the second half and both sides provided plenty of entertainment for those spectators who had braved the chilly conditions to watch the action.
Five minutes after the interval the Rams struggled to clear the ball and Reece Cameron fired off a shot which Hill had to push around the post. Moments later a corner fell to Brito at the far post but he could only hook the ball into the side netting.
Petersfield were in the ascendancy as the half wore on and substitute Olly Sturt had a great chance to score on 70 minutes. Stuart Green found space in midfield and played the ball out to the right where substitute Sturt burst into the penalty area. He fired off a shot but Oualah had got off his line quickly and was able to block the shot with his body.
Eight minutes later Whittingham went close for the Rams when they broke up the left hand side. He cut inside his man and tried to roll his shot inside the far post but his effort went just wide.
Oualah almost gifted Petersfield the three points with four minutes remaining when he made a meal of dealing with Harry Medway’s cross from the left but he regathered the ball as it bounced around at his feet.
The Rams then almost gave away their point with a minute to go when Shawn Benjamin got his head to a cross which came in from the right and he almost diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper but Hill managed to push it around the post as it flew towards the goal.
Petersfield then had a chance to snatch all three points deep into injury time. Sturt broke clear on the right and delivered the perfect cross along the six yard box. It looked like Whittingham had the simple task of tapping it into the net but at the vital moment his footing let him down and the ball eventually bounced harmlessly wide of the target.
Petersfield: Hill, Buckland, Medway, Green, Benjamin, Geddes, Tee, Wedlake, Andrews (Sturt), Whittingham, Miroy. Subs not used: Graham, Kendall, Giles.
