Petersfield Town 2 Downton 1: PETERSFIELD Town made it 12 games unbeaten as they saw off Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1 leaders Downton at Love Lane on Saturday afternoon.
It was a fairly even contest in the early stages, with the marshy pitch causing most attacking play to break down.
Downton’s Thomas Moseley went down as he twisted his knee. He got back up and played on before being taken off minutes later.
Petersfield took the lead 22 minutes in. Ryan Kennedy won the ball back on the edge of the area with a crunching challenge. Will Webb picked up the pieces as he danced through the defence to the byline and cut it back into the six yard box and Sam Howe put the ball into his own net.
Downton started to test Petersfield’s defence. However, Matt Low caught them on the break, although his effort was well blocked by the Downton keeper.
Low and Michael Wright exchanged a few good passes before Kennedy curled the ball just wide.
The Rams doubled their lead in the 71st minute. Wright laid it off to Low, and when his low cross was blocked Ollie Kershaw was first to the loose ball. His cross went through to Marvin Orepo and with his first touch he tapped the ball over the keeper.
Six minutes later Downton halved the deficit. Diego Romero did well to work the ball out wide, and a cross was bundled over the line.
Downton showed why they had been top as they pressed the Rams, but the home side’s defence stood firm as Petersfield held out for victory.
