Petersfield Town 11 Widbrook United 0: PETERSFIELD Town powered their way through to the next round of the Portsmouth Senior Cup with an 11 goal thrashing of Portsmouth Saturday League side Widbrook United.

Any fears that last Wednesday’s cup tie for the Rams could be a banana skin soon disappeared when they raced into a 3-0 lead after just 18 minutes.

Joe Briggs got clear and shot straight at keeper Joshua Steere in the opening minute before scoring at the far post from Alex Lowley’s cross from the left a minute later.

Howard Neighbour’s downward header was straight at the keeper before Lowley doubled the lead on eight minutes when he cut inside from the left and curled his shot into the far corner.

The third goal came ten minutes later after several crosses into the box from Petersfield and finally Briggs’ cross was at the right height for Neighbour to hook the ball over his shoulder and into the net.

It was all Petersfield at this stage but they had to wait another 30 minutes before they got their fourth goal. Before that Steere cleared away a shot from Briggs before turning Benny Read’s goalbound effort around the post, he then turned away Lowley’s shot and Neighbour and Lowley both saw efforts go narrowly wide.

Goal number four came on 50 minutes when Briggs hung a cross up to the far post and Neighbour headed it back across goal and into the net.

Neighbour completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes when a corner was cleared but played back into him on the edge of the six yard box.

He held the ball up before turning and shooting low into the net.

Goal six came four minutes later when a corner was played back into the box and substitute Will Essai flicked his header past Steere and into the net.

Lowley got his second goal of the night on 72 minutes when he cut in from the left hand side of the penalty area and his low shot proved to be too powerful for Steere to keep out of the net.

It was 8-0 four minutes later when a cross from the left was tapped in at the far post by another substitute, Josh Taylor.

Essai got his second goal and ninth on the night when the ball fell to him 25 yards out and he held off a challenge before firing low past the keeper on 81 minutes.

Three minutes later the ball was played down the right wing and Essai crossed low into the penalty area and the ball was turned home by Briggs.

The final goal came on 86 minutes when Briggs turned home a cross from the left to complete his hat-trick.
