THE WORDS to the Kaiser Chiefs’ song ‘Oh My God’ couldn’t be any more apt for Petersfield Town’s trip to Histon on Saturday.

‘Oh my god I can’t believe it, I’ve never been this far away from home’ is how the chorus line goes and never a truer word can be spoken about this record breaking Rams away day.

The 240-mile round trip to Cambridgeshire will rank as the club’s furthest trip for an away game in their history to date – even topping the marathon opening day of last season trek to Wellingborough to take on AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

It promises to be a long day on the road for those following Petersfield but it is a trip they will be hoping won’t prove to be a pointless exercise.

If Petersfield’s supporters get a chance to listen back to the Kaiser Chiefs’ hit from 2005 they will discover another line in the song they will be hoping applies to their side and their tussles with Histon this season.

‘Knock me down I’ll get right back up again, come back stronger than a powered-up Pacman.’

The Rams were certainly knocked down when Histon visited Love Lane last month – both teams had a man sent off, Histon were 3-0 up after just 17 minutes, Petersfield got it back to 3-3 with six minutes remaining, only to concede again a minute later and lose 4-3.

But now manager John Robson will be hoping his side’s strong start to 2017 continues and the rejuvenated Rams can head north and turn the tables on their relegation rivals.

“We always enjoy our away days at Petersfield,” said chairman Graeme Moir. “Some probably question our sanity of travelling around the M25 and further afield every other week.

“But we take a decent following of supporters with us wherever we go and whatever the result and outcome we have a good laugh and keep each other going through the good times and bad on the road.

“The break we had over Christmas seems to have done us some good. Monday’s 2-2 draw with Fleet Town was a solid point for us at home.

“We looked a solid unit to me and we are certainly digging in as a team and sticking together to try and grind results out – these are the qualities we are going to need in the months ahead.

“Histon’s visit to us was a really frantic game – we never really had a chance of getting anything by conceding three goals in the first 17 minutes but something changed for us on that night.

“In the past we would probably have gone on to lose by at least five or six goals but we showed some resilience and determination to get things back to 3-3.

“Since then we have kept that determination going and things feel like they might be turning for us slowly. We have to keep this going at Histon and come home with something from the game.

“That will keep our momentum going and allow us to keep building on the good that the break did us and our recent performances.”
