SATURDAY’S trip to Aylesbury United has been dubbed a six-pointer by Petersfield Town’s football management.

Both clubs find themselves at the wrong end of the Division 1 Central table with the hosts second from bottom and the Rams only one point and three places above them.

In terms of being a six-pointer the reference relates to the Petersfield camp’s hopes of making a sustained climb up the table.

With only 10 league games played so far, it is still way too early to label this game a relegation six-pointer for either side.

But the Rams realise that if they are to have any chance of climbing up into the top half of the table or try and push for a play-off place, a consistent run of winning form is the key to achieving this.

Petersfield ended a run of five defeats in a row last Saturday with a 2-0 league win over St Ives Town and backed this up with a 2-0 victory over Hayling United in the Portsmouth Senior Cup on Wednesday night.

Now they are eyeing a return to the consistent winning form which propelled them to the Wessex Premier Division title last season.

Assistant manager Jason Hampson said: “If we are going to stay clear of the bottom of the table this season we need to start stringing wins together.

“That is why this game is so crucial for us. If we get the victory that really will help to instil the winning habit in the side and keep us moving forwards.

“Lose and we will be sucked back towards the relegation places. So in terms of momentum that is why this game is so crucial to our season.

“We have performed well for most of the campaign so far and you can certainly make a case for us to be in the top half, and if things really click then the play-offs isn’t out of the question.

“But our first priority is to ensure we are in the Southern League still for next season. Our first target is to get to 40 points to ensure we are safe from relegation.”
