PETERSFIELD Town are putting the finishing touches to their plans to remember the ultimate Rams’ hero.
Former player Darren Chant was killed while serving his country in Afghanistan and the Rams will be continuing the annual remembrance luncheon held in his honour before their game against Potters Bar Town on Saturday afternoon.
The club will also be laying a wreath at the town’s war memorial as part of Petersfield’s Remembrance Sunday Service.
Chairman Graeme Moir said: “The Remembrance weekend will always take on extra significance for our club as we remember Darren every year with a luncheon.
“A number of our players and coaching staff are either serving in the armed forces or have done previously.
“It is important that we remember our real heroes like Darren and all others who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”
Warrant Officer Darren Chant was killed on November 3, 2009, after being shot by an Afghan gunman who he had been mentoring for police work. He played for Petersfield between 1997 and 2005 and there is a permanent memorial to him in the Love Lane clubhouse.
Tickets for the pre-match buffet luncheon cost £10, with £5 going to Help for Heroes. The event will include a short service led by the Rev Will Hughes and a minute’s silence before kick-off.
