Team Solent 8 Petersfield Town 1: PETERSFIELD Town slumped to another heavy defeat on what proved to be an embarrassing afternoon against the side they replaced at the bottom of the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division table.

The Rams had a number of key players missing for last Saturday’s basement battle but they were blown away by the students, who ran out easy winners in the end.

It could have been a different afternoon if Petersfield’s early chances in the game had gone into the net. In the second minute, Luke Kendall’s free kick into the box was glanced towards goal by the head of Jordan Geddes but it went just the wrong side of the post.

At the other end four minutes later, a cross from the right was headed back across goal to Giovanni Landu but he couldn’t keep his header from close range on target and it went just over the crossbar.

Team Solent took the lead on 11 minutes when the ball was worked down the left to Ryan Dacres-Smith, who pulled it back from the byline into the path of Julian Stahler, who had the time to pick his spot and he steered his shot into the bottom corner of the net.

They almost doubled their lead two minutes later when Jim Orvis got inside the box on the right hand side and keeper Luke Eaton had to push his shot behind for a corner.

The home side got their second goal on 15 minutes when a corner from the right was swung into the near post area and as Geddes tried to head the danger clear, under pressure he sent his header into his own net.

Petersfield should have pulled a goal back on 21 minutes when the students got caught trying to pass the ball out of defence. Luke Walker won possession before driving inside the penalty area and with only the goalkeeper to beat he blazed his shot over the goal.

At the other end a cross from the right found Jemal Wiseman with a free header at the far post but he could not steer his effort into the net.

It was 3-0 on 26 minutes when Jack Wilson wasn’t closed down so he had the time to put Landu clear and he dispatched the ball into the net.

The fourth goal came a minute before half time following a period of seven or eight passes from the home side through the midfield area. This gave Dacres-Smith the time to put Wilson clear of the Petersfield defence and he then rolled his shot past Eaton and into the net.

Petersfield’s regular Achilles heel of conceding just after half time didn’t raise itself in this game but the home side threatened to score every time they went forward.

Another good passing move in midfield eventually saw the ball crossed into the centre of the penalty area and Landu crashed his header against the crossbar.

Landu then had a header at the far post well held by Eaton and Wiseman then found some space to shoot low towards goal but his effort went just wide of the post.

At the other end, a rare Petersfield attack set Walker up with a chance to shoot from the edge of the penalty area but his shot was deflected just wide.

Team Solent got their fifth goal on 68 minutes when a ball over the top found John Wallace on the right and he crossed into the middle for Orvis to shoot and his effort was deflected past Eaton and into the net.

It was 6-0 three minutes later when Ethan Taylor was given a free header in the middle of the six yard box from a corner on the left and Eaton had no chance of keeping his effort from close range out.

Goal number seven came with eight minutes remaining when Wallace crossed the ball in from the right and Landu had a free header which he sent back across the goal and into the net.

It was 8-0 on 89 minutes when Orvis picked the ball up 20 yards out from goal and when no one closed him down he fired his shot into the far corner of the net.

Petersfield picked up a late consolation goal in the second minute of injury time when some quick play through the midfield saw Grant Powell pick up the ball on the edge of the box and he fired his shot past Bradley Banda and into the far corner of the net.
