PETERSFIELD Town striker Oliver Bailey can net a hat-trick of hat-tricks when the Rams host Bedford Town at Love Lane on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The young striker fired in a treble during Wednesday night’s 7-0 thrashing of Chalfont St Peter in the Division 1 Central encounter.

In the previous home match, a 4-1 win over Potters Bar Town, Bailey also hit a treble of goals so at the weekend he has a chance to go for a unique goalscoring feat.

Joe Briggs and Bailey both netted hat-tricks against Chalfont while Howard Neighbour got the final goal of this rout in injury team to move the Rams up to 13th place in the Division 1 South table.

Briggs’ goal after 36 minutes ended Petersfield’s barren run without a goal of 221 minutes and the home side went on to score four goals in the final 15 minutes of the match after Chalfont’s defence collapsed.

Confidence is now high in the Rams camp ahead of the visit of Bedford Town to Love Lane tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

“To be honest I thought it was a bit of a boring game to watch in the first half,” said Petersfield’s manager Ian Saunders.

“Both teams were hitting the ball too long and neither side really tried to play any constructive football.

“But we always looked a threat in the second half as we played some excellent through balls. Oliver Bailey is excellent when he plays running off the last defender and Chalfont really couldn’t cope with his pace.

“Joe Briggs was also excellent and put in some wonderful crosses all night from the right.

“What I was especially pleased about was that we kept a clean sheet.

“We have conceded goals too easily for most of this season so while scoring seven goals was fantastic, not conceding was an important factor for the whole team’s performance.”

Bedford are level on points with Petersfield in the table and sit one place below them on goal difference.

The two sides drew 2-2 when they met at Bedford at the beginning of November. Gary Norgate and Howard Neighbour were on target for the Rams when they staged a second half comeback after being 2-0 down at half time.

Saunders added: “Bedford will be another tough game for us but it is an opportunity for us to use home advantage and put some more points on the board.

“Division 1 Central has been a funny old division this season – there are some strange results every week and everyone is capable of beating each other so we need to guard against any complacency in our performance, especially after enjoying such a big victory in our previous game.”
