PETERSFIELD Town will be paying tribute to their fallen hero during the weekend’s period of remembrance.

Friends and colleagues of former Rams player Darren Chant will be coming together to remember and celebrate his life at Love Lane tomorrow (Saturday).

Before Petersfield’s home game against Wessex Premier Division leaders Andover Town kicks-off, a minute’s silence will be held to remember the fallen heroes across the two towns.

But uppermost in the minds of everyone connected to Petersfield will be Chant, who played for the club between 1997 and 2005.

The warrant officer was killed in Afghanistan in November 2009 when he was shot by a gunman who he had previously been mentoring for police work.

Every season on the home match closest to Remembrance Sunday, a minute’s silence is held at Love Lane to remember Darren and the town’s other fallen heroes and there is a permanent memorial to him in the clubhouse as well.

Chairman Graeme Moir said: “We will be welcoming a number of Darren’s friends and playing colleagues to Saturday’s game and there will also be a bugle player in attendance to sound Last Post.

“I didn’t know Darren personally but everyone I?have spoken to about him only has praise and kind words for a man who was loved by so many people.

“As a club, it is important we remember him at this time every year.”
