PETERSFIELD Town will kick off the period of Remembrance this weekend by paying tribute to their own fallen hero.

Former Ram Darren Chant was killed while serving in the Army in Afghanistan and the club holds a special event every year, as close as possible to Remembrance Sunday, to remember both him and the town’s other fallen heroes.

Chant, who played at Love Lane between 1997 and 2005, was killed in Nad E’Ali, a town in Helmand Province, on November 3, 2009.

The warrant officer was one of five British soldiers killed by an Afghan gunman who he had been mentoring for police work.

Petersfield will be holding a minute’s silence to remember Darren before their game against Kempston Rovers at Love Lane tomorrow (Saturday) at 3pm.

They will then hold a special toast to their former player in the bar after the match. The players will also be wearing poppies on their shirts during the game.

Chairman Graeme Moir said: “The club prides itself on ensuring we carry out a fitting memorial to Darren and the town’s fallen heroes every year.

“The Armed Forces have played a key part in life in Petersfield throughout many generations and I hope as many people as possible join us to pay tribute to Darren.”

The football club will also be taking part in the town’s Remembrance Sunday service and laying a wreath at the war memorial.
