PETERSFIELD Town manager Mark Summerhill is eyeing a great escape from relegation after his side survived their date in the last chance saloon at the weekend.
The Rams secured their first league victory in 112 days thanks to their 2-0 win over Cowes Sports last Saturday, a result which closed the gap to the side immediately above them in the table – Newport IOW – to six points.
Petersfield have shown steady improvement since the turn of the year and they have finally picked up the win their recent efforts have deserved.
Summerhill is backing his side to go on now and achieve the form they need to mount a great escape from the bottom of the Wessex Premier Division.
“Saturday’s result was absolutely massive for us and as a squad we believed it to be the last chance saloon for us in terms of putting some kind of run together to get away from the bottom of the table,” said the Rams’ boss.
“I thought long and hard about using those words, ‘last chance saloon,’ and the severity of the Cowes game, but the gamble paid off. We as a squad believed a result like Saturday’s was coming next.”
Is a great escape on though? Summerhill suggests the effect of the win over Cowes Sports shouldn’t be under estimated.
He added: “Yes I believe a great escape is possible. If we can kick on from Saturday and pick up points that can put pressure on the teams immediately above us.”
