Aylesbury United 2 Petersfield Town 6: THE RAMS were in rampant form on Saturday as they smashed six goals past a struggling Aylesbury United side.
Petersfield recorded their third win in a row to move up to 16th place in the Division 1 Central table – their highest league position since the end of August.
The game was packed with goalmouth incident but it really came to life in the second half when six goals were scored.
Petersfield took the lead after four minutes when they had forced a series of early corners. The final one was floated in from the right and Ryan Woodford was completely unmarked in front of goal when he headed the ball into the net.
The home side then had some chances when a cross from the left was only just deflected away from Billy Adcock who was completely unmarked at the far post and then Lewis Osborne took the ball into the penalty area, held off a strong challenge and fired off a low shot which keeper Anthony Ender had to get down for to make a one handed save.
A quick passing move through midfield between Jamie Ford, Woodford and then Joe Briggs saw the ball crossed from the right to Alek Przespolewski on the edge of the box but his low shot made while under pressure from a defender was well saved by keeper Dan Green.
The Rams doubled their lead on 31 minutes when Lewis Hyde played the ball up the right wing to Briggs, who pulled the ball across the edge of the penalty area to Przespolewski, who smashed a low shot past Green and into the net.
The same move almost brought a third goal for Petersfield when Briggs’ cross this time found Howard Neighbour but he could only manage to head the ball up into the air and Green safely gathered it.
The home side again threatened to get back into the game. On 38 minutes the ball was crossed from the left and Ender tried to punch it clear but managed to hit it into the back of Jack Wood’s head but the ball looped up and dropped on to the roof of the net.
A minute before half time Taylor Collins curled a free kick from 25 yards out around the defensive wall and Ender had to dive full length to his right to push the goalbound shot around the post.
Petersfield made a slow start to the second half and they were eventually to pay the price for doing so. Billy Adcock curled a free kick from the edge of the box towards the top corner of the goal but Ender managed to leap up to his left to turn the ball over the crossbar.
Adcock then had a free header at the near post from the corner but he somehow managed to steer the ball around the post rather than into the net.
On 51 minutes United won a penalty when Osborne went down somewhat softly under a challenge and although Ender got a hand to his shot, Jake Bewley’s penalty kick found the back of the net.
However, the Rams restored their two goal advantage eight minutes later when Green dropped a corner from the right on to the near post and the rebound fell to Alex Lowley who tapped the ball home from three yards out.
The Rams then made it 4-1 on 69 minutes when Woodford spread the ball out to Briggs on the right and he cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 20 yards out past Green and into the corner of the net.
Joe Richardson forced a full length save from Green before the home side pulled another goal back on 77 minutes. The ball was played up through the midfield to send Sonny French clear and he held off a couple of challenges to fire his shot into the roof of the net.
Petersfield then made it 5-2 a minute later when Briggs received the ball on the right and his near post cross was flicked home by Neighbour.
The Rams got their sixth goal four minutes later when Briggs managed to keep in a long through ball on the right before delivering a pin-point cross on to the head of substitute Gary Norgate and he powered the ball into the net.
Petersfield: Ender, Hyde (Searle), Wain, Woodford, Sackman, Ford, Briggs, Przespolewski, Neighbour (Norgate), Thompson (Richardson), Lowley. Subs not used: Dixon, McEnery.
