PETERSFIELD Town’s inconsistent form might just give them the perfect formula for a run in the FA?Cup.
The Rams haven’t enjoyed lengthy runs in any of the national cup competitions in the last few seasons but early exits have aided them when it came to winning back to back promotions.
With life in the Southern League bringing them plenty of highs and lows at the moment, the distraction of an FA?Cup tie might just be what they need to get them back to a winning run of form.
It worked over the Bank Holiday weekend – victory at Moneyfields was promptly followed two days later by a 2-1 win over Uxbridge at Love Lane in the league.
Saturday’s setback at Chalfont St Peter meant that form stuttered again when the Rams were looking to kick on.
However, on plenty of occasions this season Petersfield have shown that they can do what their manager Ian Saunders says they need to do now – that is defend well as a team and stick their chances away.
If, on the one-off occasions when they manage to get this right in the short term this happens to be during cup ties, the Rams have shown they are more than capable of beating teams from higher levels on their day.
“Saturday’s game at Chalfont St Peter was frustrating for us as we had so many chances to score before they took the lead,” reflected Saunders after the game.
“But that is the problem – if you don’t stick your chances away and teams capitalise on the mistakes you make at the other end, our form will continue like this.”
