Chalfont St Peter 4 Petersfield Town 1: PLUCKY Petersfield certainly gave their all in this season opening game at Chalfont on Saturday but a couple of mistakes proved to be their undoing in the end.

It could have been very different for Petersfield if they had taken the lead after only ten minutes when Matteo Corsaro raced clear of the home defence.

The turning point of the afternoon came on the half hour mark when Corsaro was unnecessarily pushed towards the edge of the pitch and his momentum sent him crashing into the pitchside fence and he was left with a nasty cut to his head.

Petersfield seemed to lose their concentration in the aftermath of this incident and they conceded twice in a matter of minutes to go 2-0 down. Tony Mendy scored the first from the penalty spot and Dean McDownell crashed the ball home from two yards out when he met Mendy’s cross from the right.

However, Petersfield grabbed a lifeline in injury time at the end of the first half after winning a free kick on the right hand side. The ball was swung into the box and Ryan Woodford’s header beat Garry Malone at his near post to make it 2-1.

It was 3-1 on 59 minutes when David Thomas’ corner from the right bounced inside the Petersfield six yard box and bounced up into the top corner of the net.

The goalscoring for the afternoon was completed on 87 minutes when Mendy got his second goal of the game when he bundled the ball home from close range.
