THEIR season may have had a bleak start at times so far but that hasn’t stopped Petersfield Town picking up one of the first prizes of the campaign to be awarded.

The Rams have been named as the Respect Team of the Month in the Sydenhams Wessex League for September.

Prizes and silverware have been far from the minds of the Petersfield camp so far this season so it came as a pleasant surprise when they were named Kappa/MJM Sports Respect Award winners for the Premier Division last month.

League officials calculate who wins the award based on their disciplinary record and how club’s measure up against the FA’s Respect Programme, which aims to improve behaviour and language both on and off the pitch at football clubs.

Chairman Graeme Moir believes the award reflects the commitment the playing squad have shown through some difficult times.

He said: “The commitment of most of our players has been unbelievable at times so far this season.

“When you think they have had to endure 10-0 and 9-0 defeats on the road and still they turn up every week, giving everything in matches to try and turn the current situation around.

“Some have played through injuries and illness when they should have been resting up to recover.

“This is an award many teams wouldn’t be too bothered about winning but I?think it recognises the spirit being shown by our players.”
