IT MADE a few Rams followers chuckle when it was pointed out to them that Monday’s draw with Fleet left Petersfield Town still unbeaten in the calendar year.

But the comment from chairman Graeme Moir is one joke everyone at the club wants to see run as long as possible now.

The Rams were good value for the point they got from a 2-2 draw in the north Hampshire derby clash at Love Lane.

The longer John Robson’s side can keep their unbeaten start to 2017 going the better the chances are that the club can clamber out of the relegation zone at the bottom of Division 1 Central.

Petersfield face a crucial test of their solid start to the new year when they head to Histon on Saturday – the side immediately above them in the league table.

Come home with a point or more from their 240-mile round trip to Cambridgeshire – the Rams’ longest away trip of the Southern League season – and the confident start to 2017 will continue to grow.

Moir said: “I made the remark that we were still unbeaten in 2017 to cheer a few people up after the game against Fleet Town.

“It got a few chuckles but it is a pro-active way of taking a positive look at our situation. We didn’t make the best of starts against Fleet by going behind after just 20 seconds of the game.

“But as a team we dug in and looked a solid unit. There is a long way to go to get away from the drop zone but this could be our start.”
