PETERSFIELD Town manager Mark Summerhill was left feeling frustrated after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Laverstock and Ford in Division One of the Sydenhams Wessex League.

The Rams looked to be on course for all three points at Love Lane on Saturday, but they conceded a late equaliser from the penalty spot.

Summerhill said: “It was a funny sort of game. We played relatively well and created good chances in the first half.

“At 0-0 at half time I was not disappointed. We were on top and were creating chances.

“In the second half we stretched the game and Matt Low missed a couple of one-on-ones. The game hinged on those moments.

“When we went 1-0 up we didn’t manage the game. We gave away cheap free kicks and made a lot of basic errors. We should have seen it out.

“We’ve drawn our past three league games, and if this is our quiet spell it’s not the end of the world. We’re not getting beaten, so it’s not a disaster.

“If we win at Whitchurch this draw is a reasonable result.

“We’re creating good chances to win, but we’ve got to take them.

“We can still go second if we win our games in hand.”

Saturday’s game went ahead only after the Love Lane surface passed a pitch inspection, although Summerhill says the pitch isn’t helping his side.

“We got a referee in to look at the pitch and he said it was playable,” said Summerhill.

“The pitch is a hindrance for us now. It slows the game down. We played two combative centre midfielders and got the ball wide and got in behind Laverstock at will.

“I couldn’t fault the effort and work rate, but we lacked experience and need to learn.”

Next up for the Rams is a trip to Whitchurch United on Saturday.

The Rams lost 1-0 at home to Whitchurch earlier in the season, and Summerhill admitted he would happily take a point from Saturday’s trip.

“Whitchurch is a big game for us,” said Summerhill.

“They are a dogged team and it’s a difficult place to go.

“We’re capable of going there and winning if we get it right, but I wouldn’t be disappointed with a point.

“If we won I’d be over the moon, but I’d take a point.

“We’ve conceded the fewest goals in the league and we’re creating chances, so we’re not doing much wrong. If we score a goal or two, the confidence will come flooding back.”
